I think Songs of Conquest will shine with a focus on narrative single player experiences. Typically you need some type of training in any lore with magic to harness it. I get there's an in-game explanation for why magic works the way it does but I don't gel with the idea that a "mage" can just kinda do whatever magically because of troops. The magic system is odd I can't tell if I like it or not. Music isn't very inspiring to me either which is a pretty big deal for a game like this. There's no RNG map editor and most of the maps in the base game are made for one or two "players". While pretty maps are typically cluttered with objects and it can be difficult to tell what is clickable or not. The UI is a chore with nothing really feeling like it has a "flow". The battles are good but none of the troops I've used have had anything unique about them. I can only hope that this encouraging Early Access debut is furthered by continual refinements and additions by the developers. However, all that said, I've been having a blast playing it, and that's coming from someone who never stopped playing HOMM III since 1999. "Easy" in this case is too easy, and that's coming from someone who is absolutely a coward in these kinds of games. And, as mentioned previously, the AI is very reckless and perhaps does not evaluate the threat level of the player particularly well (they seem to especially underestimate dragons), and also seem really reluctant to claim even lightly guarded mines around them. At least one interactable object has "Missing Interaction Text" displayed upon interaction. On a custom map featuring a claimable source of power in the map center that revealed the entire map, taking turns with the whole map revealed resulted in very buggy AI turns that somehow kept trying to focus on an AI Wielder during my turn, which forced me to save and reload each turn for a while. Some map objects will simply become invisible, but are still interactable and will show an outline when the mouse is hovered over them. The overworld is surprisingly resource intensive to render, and as an example, when you are teleported across the map, it may take a few seconds for the terrain to load. That said, there are a lot of issues that do paint it as a definitely "early access" title. As currently the only AI options are "easy" or "normal", I have to imagine a "hard" would be implemented at some point. The things that currently are not great about it seem to be things that can potentially ironed out, including the dumb as a dog AI. However, the fact that it is as good at it is for its Early Access debut is very promising. I think Lavapotion (dev team) mentioned in one of their videos they like pixel art and they wanted to make this game in this style, for whatever reason, so I'm not sure they ever gonna change/add possible HD style to Songs.Right, it's good as-is, but the idea that it "might be better than Heroes of Might and Magic" is questionable (especially since they have neglected to name which game in the series - not many are going to challenge the idea of it being better than HOMM I, but it being better than III is patently absurd). Sadly, you can't satisfy 100% gamers no matter how hard you'll try so I think it is better focus on what you personally like and can do. I like the difference this game brings, graphic and gameplay wise and just like you said, as some people won't touch this game because of pixel art (which is probably true), there is another group of people who would skip this game, being an HD-Heroes clone.Īt the end of the day you pick what's important to you. I can also say that there are people who absolutely love and adore this style and to be honest, I am glad it is not HoMM-alike (visually) because I don't need another adaptation of Heroes. They have specific goals and vision in mind, and to disrupt it just to please everyone won't be wise. ![]() ![]() It is undoubtedly nice to have every single option possible, but also, let's not forget, this is a small team of people. I don't think it is an urgent priority right now to make the game look 'accessible' for some, when there is more urgent matter - better AI, more campaigns, full release, new factions etc. It possibly can increase user adoption - but it will also take lots of time and effort. ![]() I will once again mention recent TMNT Shredder's Revenge game where I've noticed some people asking similar thing and wanting modern graphics, HD, 4k quality etc, but it is what it is - I believe it was a dev team choice (pixel art). This is your opinion, and I don't think that graphics should be main indicator for liking/disliking the game, but that is just an opinion as well.
